  1. Survey Objectives
The objective of the Ecosystem Survey for Regional Diversity is to identify the components and the structure of the ecosystem in a comprehensive manner through field surveys, etc., in areas accommodating important ecosystems which require preservation, and to obtain basic data required for preparing guidelines to conserve areas that are crucial for biodiversity preservation.
  2. Survey Content and Methods
In this survey, ecosystems with many constituents (those consisting of diverse environments such as forests, grass fields and waterfronts, and those accommodating many species), ecosystems accommodating many unique or endangered species, and typical ecosystems such as wilderness areas were selected from among ecosystems which depend on diverse natural conditions in Japan. A survey was conducted with respect to the following items in each area.

(1) Identification of Ecosystem Constituents
a. Production of list of species
b. Identification of distribution of wildlife species in detail
c. Measurement and estimation of population of animals with indicator properties
d. Other

(2) Identification of Ecosystem Structure
a. Identification of plant communities (composition of species, structure of communities) (preparation of vegetation map)
b. Identification of dynamic state of population of animals with indicator properties
c. Identification of existing volume of vegetation and production volume of vegetation
d. Identification of climatic, topographic and other inorganic environments
e. Other
  3. Survey Results
Ishikawa Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture (Hakusan Area)
(1) List of species and distribution map: The list of species was prepared on the basis of literature surveys and field surveys, and distribution maps were produced for some species.
(2) Survey on habitat and growth environment for specific animal and plant species: A fact-finding survey was conducted with respect to the use of environment and the habitat density of species constituting major ecosystems in the region.
(3) Vegetation history: The history of vegetation was investigated by analyzing the fossil pollen in peat layers deposited no later than 10,000 years ago in major plains in the alpine belts. The development of the alpine belts was studied.
(4) Survey on natural environment: The form and distribution of periglacial landforms were clarified. The earth temperature and movement were measured with respect to major ones, and the development process was investigated. Further, in prominent locations, the temperature, soil moisture and snow pressure were continually measured to study the growth environment of plants.

Nagasaki Prefecture (Tsushima Coastal Area)
(1) A basic information map was prepared with respect to the natural environment in the Tsushima coastal area. The ecosystem was classified into 5 groups, based on which a natural environment map was produced.
(2) From the basic information map, data deemed to represent habitat conditions for diverse animals and plants were extracted, and areas with a particularly high degree of diversity and naturalness were extracted by matching them (4 areas).
(3) Nine prominent areas in the Tsushima coastal area were chosen as samples.
(4) The "biodiversity" and the "ecosystem" of the area were identified by clarifying the relationship between "location and organisms", and the special arrangement of the organisms' habitats.

Nagano Prefecture (Norikuradake Area)
(1) List of species and distribution map: The list of species was prepared on the basis of literature surveys, with respect to principal organisms which comprise Norikuradake (mammals, breeding birds, insects, butterflies & moths, vascular plants and plant communities). For some organisms, a distribution map was produced.
(2) Survey on growth and habitat status of specific plants and animals: The habitat status of Lagopus mutus (habitat range, breeding status, etc.) and the growth status of Pinus pumila (distribution range, individual conditions, etc.) were identified as fauna and flora representative of Norikuradake, based on field surveys.
(3) Survey on natural environment: The climatic and topographic environment of Norikuradake was investigated as the habitat of organisms.
