ąŁ 1. Survey Objectives
Focusing on distribution or range, this survey was undertaken to determine the state of wild animals in Japan. The survey encompassed mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, freshwater fishes and insects.
ąŁ 2. Survey Content and Methods
The items below were surveyed for mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, freshwater fishes and insects.

Taxonomic groups Target Species Methods
Mammals 8 species of wide-ranging medium and large animals whose range overlaps in part with areas of human habitation. Forest workers and wildlife protection specialists (2,235) interviewed hunters (44,853) in each prefecture.
Birds 257 species known to be or possibly breeding in Japan. Survey sections were selected from the entire area of the 47 prefectures. Two methods were used; a site survey and a survey of existing printed resources.
Amphibians & Reptiles 34 species with limited distribution or which are threatened with rapid reduction in numbers or local extinction due to human activities or which are scientifically important. Site surveys to the extent possible to follow up and check documentary and interview data.
Freshwater Fishes 27 species with limited distribution or which are threatened with rapid reduction in numbers or local extinction due to human activities previously selected by the Environment Agency, 44 species chosen by the individual prefectures. Site surveys, to the extent possible, to verify documentary and interview evidence.
Insects Ten species selected by the Environment Agency as representing relatively familiar and widespread species and indicative of an ability to flourish in environments ranging from mountains to plains; and specific species in each prefecture meeting selection standards. (50 - 100 species per prefecture) With the cooperation of The Entomological Society of Japan, Society members collected data from print resources and made site surveys and interviews as necessary to cover as large an area as possible.

ąŁ 3. Survey Results

Mammals were surveyed thoroughly all over the country and a detailed distribution map was prepared. Findings are shown for each prefecture on a 1: 50,000 scale topographical map divided into 16 equal sections (Multiple-5 Area Grid, about 5km X 5km grid), to indicate the distribution of each species over the entire country.

For birds, a distribution map showing the breeding areas of 205 of the 257-target species was prepared.

Likewise distribution maps were made for amphibians, reptiles and freshwater fishes. Research specialists analyzed biogeography and taxonomy, and the position of each species as to conservation requirements.

The insect survey was done on 1,764 target species selected by each prefecture. A nationwide distribution map was made for the ten-indicator species chosen by the Environment Agency. Species circumstances as to distribution and state were checked by research specialists. Using the indicator species, environmental conditions in every prefecture were diagnosed.
