It breeds at Kamchatka peninsula, coast of Okhotsk, and northern Sakhalin in summer,
and migrates to coast and lakes of Hokkaido Island in winter. It spent the night in woodland near to water.
It captures fishes, birds, and small mammals or takes a rest on branches or drift ices in the daytime.
The population is decreasing due to deforestation at breeding place. Therefore, Ministry of the Environment
cooperates with Russian government for research of migration route by satellite, as well as survey of breeding
in summer and distribution in winter.
