Abundance of Species

The Japanese fauna is relatively rich. Comparison of the number of species among regions is not easy because not all regions have been equally well studied and each region has its own characteristics. However, compared to areas of similar size, like Great Britain and New Zealand, the number of species is large in Japan. Compared to the neighbouring countries which have many animal species of common origins with those of Japan, the number of species per unit land area is larger in Japan. China, for example, which is 25 times as large as Japan, does not have such a 25 times more species than Japan. There is a general tendency for species composition to be more complex in warmer and humid regions. The Japanese fauna, which contains slightly fewer species than Taiwan and Vietnam, can be said to be relatively rich, considering the fact that most of Japan belongs to the temperate zone.

The relative richness of Japanese fauna has a geographical faundation.

Geographical Background

The spread of temperatures is very large for its small land area, because its length from north to south is comparable to large countries . The large spread of temperatures creates a variety of environments, which in turn makes the existance of various kinds of animal possible. Except for species demanding vast territories, animals depending on particular environmental conditions can find a niche at least somewhere. In spite of the diversity of environmental conditions, these is no difficult sites like deserts which make continental fauna rather poor. This also makes the Japanese fauna diverse. Within Japan, however, Hokkaido, which belongs to the continental zoogeographical region, in contrast to the other parts of the country, has a monotonous fauna, though its cold climate is also contributes to this monotony.

Most islands of the Japanese Archipelago are continental islands, and have a large basic stock of fauna which migrated from the continent, contrary to oceanic islands which have a limited number of species because of the lack of opportunities of immigration. In old islands, the invasion by more evolved species is hindered by isolation and the opportunity for the survival of species of older origins is greater. There are many examples of relic distribution. During the long history of isolation, some species differentiated and became endemic ones.

Located on the orogenic zone of the Pacific Rim, Japan is mountainous. Mountains, isolated from each other like islands, often have their own their own endemic species. There are many examples of relic distribution in the mountains to retreat of the ocean or glaciers.

A number of independent mountain ranges exist in this small country and abundant precipitation runs into numerous rivers which are short and rapid. Much of the freshwater fauna in these small streams differentiated into spicies endemic to their habitats. As there are few inland water, fishes that gentle streams are not found except in the Tone Riveer. Lake Biwa, the largest inland body of water in Japan, has the environment of a freshwater sea. This environment, together with its old geohistorical origin, brought about the richness of freshwater species endemic to this lake.

Generally speaking, the characteristic of the Japanese fauna is the abundance of species due to isolation. A variety of species are packd into this miniature landscape. In other words, many species are preserved because more evolved species have not been able to invade from the countinent. The scarceness of large predators high in the hierarchy of the food chain also contributes to the abundance of species, both for land and freshwater fauna.
