ALTERATION OF SURFACE GROUND

The Earth, on which we live, is covered by a crust, 30 to 40 km thick, like an apple peel. The thin film on this apple peel is called surface ground. Soil is the part of the surface ground containing sufficient moisture to support plant and animal life, and accumulation and decomposition of organic matter take place in it actively. Soil is the basis that supports ecosystems and is an important component of the natural environment.

In spite of the importance of surface ground as a resource, its significance has not been well recognized, and careless alteration of it is progressing, as worms eat an apple.

The map compares the states of alteration of the surface ground at three stages of economic development, 1945, 1960, and 1975 in the Kanto Region. It tells us how rapidly the alteration has been during these years, and gives us an index of the degradation of the quality of our environment. For the conservation of nature it is urgent to take good care of the surface ground, for it is the source of life.
