This park consists of Mt. Unzen, an active
volcano, and, more than 70 islands of Amakusa.
Mt. Unzen is the name of mountainous area
which have a lot of peaks and hot springs.
The cluster of tholoide style volcano affords
panoramic views. Roads and hotel facilities
are well accommodated, and Mt. Unzen has
been loved by foreigners as their summer
resort for a long time. Autumnal tints and
frost flowers attract visitors. From June
1991, Fugendake, the highest volcano of Mt.
Unzen has been very active and is sending
pyroclastic flows so many times.
The islands of Amakusa lies south of Mt.
Unzen. They contain many scenic spots, including
the serene Amakusa-Matsusima and the precipices
on the western side. Their history associated
with the persecution of the early Christians
in the Edo era and crypt-Christian monuments
can be observed in this area. After completion
of the Amakusa Five Bridges, west-east route
of Kyushu main is-land, i.e. Nagasaki-Unzen-Amakusa-Aso-Beppu
has become a wonderful touristic course.
