■Shiretoko National Park 38,633 ha.:(June 1, 1964)

This park is located on a peninsular (65 km in length) of the eastern tip of Hokkaido protruding into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is well known for its volcanoes, primeval forests sea cliffs and sea fowls. Shiretoko National Park is one of the richest in primeval attractions among whole national parks system of Japan. Mt. Shiretoko, Mt. Iwo, Mt. Rausu, etc. of the volcanic range form a backbone of the peninsula, so to speak, and primeval spruce and fir forests are dotted with volcanic dammed lakes. Japan's largest mammal species of Ezo brown bears live in this area. Sharply-cut cliffs stand along the coastline, on which sea gulls, sea cormorants, blackchinned martins and other sea fowls are breeding.
The best season to visit this park is summer. Mountain climbers and trekkers need to bring along their camping equipments because no mountain hut is available.
