| ąŁSaikai National Park 24,636 ha.:(March. 16, 1955) |
|
 |
This park consists of more than 400 islands,
large and small, including Hirado, Kujukushima
Islands, and Goto (five islands) Archipelago,
extending off northwestern extremity of Kyushu.
In sharp contrast to Seto-naikai National
Park which locates in inland sea area studded
with many islands, Saikai National Park possesses
dynamic oceanic scenery.
Kujukushima Islands are a cluster of nearly
200 isles situated west of Sasebo City. Hirado
retains the historic sites of its erstwhile
port for foreign trade. Goto Islands have
interesting inlets and high cliffs as well
as rare volcanic formations, i.e. aspite-homate
and cindercone.
Climate is mild, and many subtropical plants
grow. Old intercourse with Chinese main land
and crypt-Christian activities, which were
officially banned by Shogun in Edo era, can
be traced there today. Summer is the best
season to visit this park. Swimming, fishing
and excursions by boat are very popular.
