2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) as proclaimed by the United Nations. It is also an important year in which the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the 5th meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP MOP/5) will be held in Japan. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity is the organization in charge of the IYB, and has selected an IYB logo and slogan, which were announced on September 14, 2009.

Biodiversity is life. Biodiversity is our life.
This logo places a rainbow-like band composed of many colors underneath Japanese words describing the importance of joining all life on the earth together. The band expresses the need to create a world in which the many diverse forms of life are all joined together in the same way that the band joins together a broad range of colors to create a rainbow.
