What is the International Year of Biodiversity?

  • Overview of the International Year of Biodiversity
  • Introducing the UN Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity

The objectives of the IYB 2010 are to achieve the threefold objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); namely, the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources, and to raise public awareness for achieving the 2010 biodiversity target*.

The UN also encourages the member states to establish national committees to hold various events for the IYB.
The government of Japan has established a national committee and is currently working on the preparations for some events related to biodiversity, including the IYB closing event to be held in Ishikawa prefecture in December 2010.

* The target is "to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss".

History

Following the recommendations of the 8th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2006, the 61st General Assembly of the United Nations in December 2006 declared that 2010 would be the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB). It was decided that the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity would be the institution in charge of the IYB.
(UN resolution 61/203)

Objectives

The IYB is intended to raise public awareness regarding the threefold objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); namely (1) the conservation of biological diversity, (2) the sustainable use of its components, and (3) access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources, as well as regarding the 2010 biodiversity target.
